Choosing a Domain Name

The first step in creating your real estate website is to register a domain name. A good domain name is very important to the success of your website. You have the following 3 choices when selecting a domain name for your website:

1. Keyword Rich Domain Name

Having a keyword rich domain name is the best option to get clients from Internet Searches. Your prospective clients are more likely to search on Google for what they want. For example, “Strathaven Real Estate” or “Homes for Sale in Strathaven”. Search engines like Google favour domain names that have the keywords the user is searching for. Therefore your website has a better chance of ranking high in Google.

TIP

Please keep in mind that having good keywords in the domain name is only one of the many factors that Google uses to rank a website. If you are unable to secure a keyword rich domain name (for example, “StrathavenRealEstate.com”) do not worry too much about it. There are many other methods to rank your website high on Google. I will cover these methods in later sections.

2. Your Own Name

If you do not want to register a keyword based domain name but instead want to promote your own name it is perfectly fine to register your name as your website’s domain name. A few years back I wouldn’t have recommended this option, because, at that time search engines were the primary method to find your website. But today, the advent of social networking sites has changed the dynamics on how people find you on the Internet. Social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook are playing a vital role in promoting your online business. Therefore having a domain name with your real name is fine in today’s Internet where social media provides a powerful platform in promoting your personal brand.

Registering your own name as your domain name is ideal if you already have a good reputation and you are well known in the community.

3. Register the name of your business

If you own a real estate brokerage business with a registered company name, it would make sense to use the name of your business as the name of your website domain.

Registering Multiple Domain Names

If you are not sure which of the above options to choose, you can register multiple domain names. You can then forward one domain to the other. For example, you can register “PaulAndrews.com” and then forward that domain to your second domain “StrathavenRealEstate.com” (or vice versa).

TIP

Before you choose a domain name make sure the domain has not been already registered. You do not want to spend a lot of time choosing a domain name only to find that it has been registered by someone else. Head on to GoDaddy and quickly check whether the domain name is up for grab.
