Registering your Domain Name and Hosting Your Website

Now that you have chosen your domain name, it’s time to register it before someone else grabs it! The best place to register your domain name is GoDaddy. As the largest domain name registrar in the world no wonder that GoDaddy is the most popular choice of many for registering their domains.

Hosting your Domain

Once you have registered your domain name, it is time to sign up for a hosting package. It is important that you choose a reliable web hosting company. I personally use HostGator as the webhost for all of my websites. HostGator provides reliable hosting at an affordable price.

Pointing your Domain to your Web Host

Once you have registered a domain name and also signed up for a web hosting package it is time to connect your domain to your web host.

You need to tell your domain name registrar (GoDaddy) to point your domain to your web host (HostGator). To do this, simply follow the instructions below.

  1. Login into GoDaddy with your User Name and Password
  2. Click Domains ? My Domains
  3. Click on your domain name
  4. Now click on the Name servers Icon
  5. Change the custom name servers to point to the name servers that HostGator sent you.

The email that you received from HostGator (when you signed up for your hosting package) would have this information. The name server details looks like the following:

NS1.HostGator.com

NS2.HostGator.com

Congratulations! Now your domain is pointing to you web host. Please note that it will take around 24 – 48 hrs for this change to take effect. Once this is complete, when you type yourdomain.com you will be taken to a page hosted at HostGator.

TIP

Many people make the mistake of registering the domain name with the webhosting company they choose. Keeping the domain and web hosting package in the same company is a really bad idea! For example, if you want to move your hosting to a different company, your current web host may be reluctant to let you go. Since they are losing you as client they will try their best to keep you from moving to another service. So the best advice is to register your domain name with a reputable registrar like GoDaddy and buy your hosting package from a reliable hosting company such as HostGator.

Another risk is, when you cancel your hosting package your domain name too can get cancelled accidently. If you do not remember to renew your name you can lose your domain forever. Therefore, always keep the domain name and web host packages with different companies.
